Up to 120 parking places will be unavailable during the refurbishment works at Patriotic Street Car Park which starts on Tuesday 8 January and continues until early September 2008. However, there is capacity in the other town car parks to accommodate those displaced by the works.
Pier Road Car Park currently has quite a number of spaces available on a daily basis and would provide a good alternative for commuter parking. Also, the top three floors of Sand Street Car Park will be converted to long stay parking, allowing the use of season tickets or paycards.
This is the first major refurbishment in Patriotic Street Car Park since it was built in 1986, and it is essential these repairs and upgrades are undertaken. The £1.1 million contract has been scheduled for completion prior to the start of works in the Esplanade Car Park.
As it is difficult to predict or manage the way commuters will react to the loss of spaces at Patriotic Street and the new temporary availability of long stay parking on three levels at Sand Street, Transport and Technical Services recommend allowing extra time to find a parking place, particularly in the first few days. Parking Control staff will monitor Patriotic Street, Sand Street top floors and the Esplanade during the peak commuter hour in the morning and signage will display whether there are still spaces available.
The contract will not reduce the amount of hospital patient parking.
“It is important for all commuters who use the public car parks in town, to allow a little extra time for parking as there is bound to be a certain amount of initial disruption as people change their parking habits” said Deputy Guy de Faye, Minister for Transport and Technical Services. “The work that is being undertaken at Patriotic Street is essential to prolonging the life of the car park and although this may cause temporary inconvenience for the public, there will be long term benefit.”
