The eighth annual Compost Awareness Week (CAW) started on Sunday with the aim to encourage more people to recognise the benefits of home composting.
As well as generating free, quality compost for your garden, home composting can help to reduce the contents of a household bin by approximately a third yet many people are still not aware how easy home composting is.
To help people get started, the States of Jersey provides promotional home composting kits which are for sale at most local garden centres* for just £10. The kit includes a compost bin, a kitchen caddy and a user guide. Help is at hand to ensure you get the best out of your compost bin through a helpline on 448448 or emailing
compost@gov.je
Last year 924 States of Jersey home composting kits were sold which takes the total number of kits sold to 2031. The target is to sell 4000 composting kits by 2009.
States of Jersey Recycling Officer, John Rive, said “Home composting is a great way to increase your home’s recycling rate. Once you start home composting kitchen and garden waste, you will notice a significant reduction in the contents of your household rubbish bin and, over time, you will benefit from a free supply of compost.”
