Construction work on Jersey Airport’s new Air Traffic Control Building and Tower will begin tomorrow, Tuesday 21 October 2008. The building will be located near the eastern end of the departures terminal and will eventually replace the existing air traffic control facility. This has now reached the end of its useful life and is beyond economic repair. In addition, under safety standards set down by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the current building is too close to the runway and therefore causes an obstruction. Once completed, the new building will have vastly improved visibility over the whole airfield.
Construction of the new building, which has a budget of £6m, is likely to take up to 53-weeks to complete. This will be followed by a further six months for the equipment fit out and staff training before the facility becomes fully operational, expected in the second quarter of 2010. The current air traffic facilities will subsequently be demolished during the second half of 2010, forming part of the longer term redevelopment of the arrivals facilities.
The principal building will be two storeys high with a mixture of block work and a high-quality aluminium curved rain screen cladding on the 39-metre tower. As work is predominantly due to be carried out during daylight hours there is not expected to be any disruption to passengers or flights. Local company AC Mauger are the contractors.
