Senator Freddie Cohen, Minister for Planning and Environment has launched the new Jersey Design Guide. The launch formed part of the Jersey Design Awards presentation ceremony which took place at the Royal Yacht Hotel.
The Jersey Design Guide is an electronic publication that aims to create a common understanding between architects, planners, applicants, developers and wider community of what constitutes good architectural design.
The Guide, which is a joint publication between the Planning and Environment Department and the Association of Jersey Architects, is a living document. It will be regularly updated as additional information is incorporated to reflect the myriad of factors that influence the delivery of good architecture.
Freddie Cohen, Minister for Planning and Environment said: “I want Jersey to rejoice in its architecture and to replace mediocrity with exceptional architecture that combines local relevance with the very best of 21st century design. The Design Guide, which focuses not just on the architecture of a building but also on its relevance to its setting, is an important step in helping achieve that vision. It explains good architecture in the Jersey context.”
Mike Waddington, Chair of the Association of Jersey Architects said: “We are delighted to be launching the Jersey Design Guide during Architecture Week 2008. As Architecture Week 2008 will demonstrate, good local architects understand what good design means and, more importantly, what it means in the Jersey context. The Guide will help us communicate that to others.”
