Jersey Higher Education Fair - Thursday March 6th 2008

28 February 2008

This year’s Higher Education Fair is set to be the best yet.

More than 70 universities from the UK will be coming to Jersey to take part in the annual exhibition.  Agencies representing universities from as far afield as Australia , New Zealand , Hong Kong and South Africa will also be present, making this the most comprehensive fair to date in the Island .

Taking place at Hautlieu School on Thursday 6 March the event has secured sponsorship from leading Channel Island law firm, Carey Olsen.

In addition to giving the Island ’s students a chance to find out more about the various universities, there will be the opportunity to hear more on a range of specific subjects, such as criminology, media, law, sport and veterinary medicine amongst others.

The specialist presentations will be given by university tutors in break-out class rooms during the fair at 4.15pm and 5.15pm .

The issue of university funding will be covered in a talk by the Department for Education, Sport and Culture.

Before the fair university representatives will also be visiting schools to give talks and lead interactive workshops to encourage students, aged 14 and above, to think about the idea of higher education and the options available to them.

“This presents local students with a wonderful opportunity to talk directly to universities and start to gain varied and extensive information essential for the important decisions that lie ahead,” said Andy Gibbs, Head of Careers & Work related Learning at the Department for Education, Sport & Culture.

“The series of presentations taking place during the event will give students and parents the opportunity for further in depth information, all of which will undoubtedly aid the decision making and application process for university.”

Carey Olsen will have a stand at the Higher Education Fair. The firm's HR staff will be on hand to offer advice to any students considering a career in law, as well as give more information about the firm’s bursary scheme.

"It is important that we encourage young people to develop their skills at university, and hopefully they will return to the Island to practice,” said Steve Hunt, Director of Marketing at Carey Olsen.

“Carey Olsen is very pleased to sponsor the Higher Education Fair and the fact that universities come to Jersey from all over the UK and as far away as New Zealand just goes to show the reputation this event has.”

The Higher Education Fair will take place at Hautlieu School on Thursday 6 March from 1.30 – 3.30pm and 4.00 – 6.30 pm and is open to the general public throughout.
