Happy No Smoking Day from the Help2Quit Team!

12 March 2008

News Release 12th March 2008

Today is National No Smoking Day and the perfect time to celebrate if you have successfully given up smoking.

In Jersey more people than ever are deciding to live life without cigarettes.

In 1999 29% of the adult population smoked compared to only 20% in 2007 (Jersey Social Survey).

The restriction on smoking (Workplaces) ( Jersey ) regulations (2006) was introduced in January 2007 followed by the formation of The States of Jersey Stop Smoking Service called Help2Quit.

Since that time 1 local person has successfully quit smoking every day using the free support and treatment available via the Help2Quit structured programmes

There are many benefits from deciding to become ‘smoke free’ and your reasons for making this decision may different from your family and friends.

·         The risk of long term heart disease and cancer is reduced.

·         General fitness and ability to undertake aerobic exercise is improved.

·         Financial savings of £1,825 per year for an average 20 cigarettes per day smoker.

·         Improved air quality and safety of those who share the same household especially children and babies.

If you are ready to stop smoking but would like to join other smokers to gain additional support why not   consider enrolling for the Help2Quit group course that will next commence in April. Look out for the Highlands Adult Education Prospectus that will be included in tomorrow’s edition of the Jersey Evening Post. For further enquiries please telephone Help2Quit on freephone 0800 735 11 55.
