The States of Jersey wants to reassure those people affected by the fire in St Peter on Monday that anyone who has lost their official documentation will be sympathetically dealt with by the authorities.
A meeting was held this morning of representatives from the parish of St Peter, the emergency services and the relevant States departments. In discussing how to ensure continuing support, it was drawn to their attention that some of those affected by the fire are concerned they have lost passports, driving licences and other official documentation, and for some their jobs depend on these licences.
The States want to make it clear that any loss of documentation will be sympathetically dealt with by the relevant authorities.
The Customer Services Centre at Cyril Le Marquand House has been dealing with calls from people who need advice on issues like housing and income support, and also from some who have lost important documents in the fire. The Social Security Department has been advising people who’ve attended the office with specific requests for help.
The States Emergency Planning Officer, Mike Long, said – “There has been amazing generosity from local residents, and already the Parish of St Peter has collected more than £7,300. And that’s without any of the money collected by the Co-op. The parish is currently considering how to organise the distribution of this fund.
“We are now concentrating on ensuring everyone affected has somewhere more permanent to go when they leave the temporary accommodation that was arranged for them.”
Another meeting of the strategic co-ordination group will be held on Monday.

You can donate money at any branch of the Channel Islands Co-op. The Co-op will then pass on the money to St Peter’s parish hall, where donations are being collated. The distribution of the fund will be organised at a later date.
Clothing and toys already donated are still being distributed from St Thomas Church Hall in Val Plaisant, St Helier. Tel 720235. Please do not take anything else to the hall as there is already enough for those affected.
Anyone with furniture to offer should call St Peter’s Parish Hall on 481236 from 9am-4pm and leave their name, contact number and details of the items they have on offer. Please don’t take furniture to the parish hall.
Anyone who’s suffering psychologically from the emergency will be referred for help through the usual channels
