Although 548 vehicles passed through this peak hour road check, only one vehicle was taken off the road. Five drivers were issued with defect notices and a further four drivers were required to produce their driving documents at the St John parish hall or Police headquarters.
Between 7:30am and 9:00am on Thursday 10 April 2008, Officers from Driver and Vehicle Standards, (DVS), the States of Jersey Police and the Honorary Police of St John joined forces to conduct a road check outside the parish hall.
The vehicle that was impounded for defective steering and bodywork is likely to be scrapped. Five drivers were issued with defect notices requiring them the present their vehicles at DVS with defects rectified. Defects included bodywork, wheels and lighting problems. Additionally, a handful of drivers were advised at the roadside about very minor lighting and bodywork problems.
Three drivers have to produce there driving documents at the St John parish hall and one driver has to exchange his foreign driving licence for a Jersey one and produce the new licence at Rouge Bouillon Police station.
A further two drivers have to formally notify DVS of a change in their vehicle ownership details and one of those drivers has to exchange his foreign driving licence for a Jersey licence.
This was a great opportunity for the various agencies to work together in promoting road safety and detecting un-roadworthy vehicles. It was particularly pleasing that the vast majority of the vehicles passing through the check were in good condition.
Inspector of Motor Traffic Alan Muir commented: “It’s heartening that only a few vehicles had defects and that the vast majority were in good condition. Most of the defects found should have been obvious to the drivers if they had bothered to give their vehicle a routine weekly check.”
