Students find out about Health Professions

19 June 2008

Year 12 students considering a health-related university course and career are being offered a valuable insight into what different courses may entail.  Many students enjoy science and know they would be suited to a career in a health environment, but struggle to choose between the various career paths on offer, as they have often had little practical experience of what a career as an Audiologist, Podiatrist or Midwife for example would actually entail.

On Wednesday 25th June, nominated Year 12 students from all of the island sixth forms and Highlands College will have the opportunity to attend an event where university lecturers will deliver practical sessions similar to those experienced by undergraduates. They will also receive key advice on making applications to university, and will have the opportunity to speak to current university students about their experiences.

The event is being run by the University of Southampton which attracts a significant number of students from Jersey every year. Vocational courses training students in specific healthcare and medical careers are a popular choice for Jersey students, with 120 students currently studying subjects ranging from Medicine to Physiotherapy to Occupational Therapy.

Steve Ryall from the University of Southampton explains “It is hoped that the combination of presentations and activities will help students gain some insight into the work of a variety of healthcare professions. It will also highlight the team based approach that is used to enable the person at the centre of care to achieve their potential”.
