On Thursday 10 September 2009 the States of Jersey Statistics Unit launches the first Jersey Business Tendency Survey (BTS) which will be run on a quarterly basis. The aim of the survey is to provide a timely snapshot of the state of Jersey’s economy.
Business tendency surveys are used widely around the world in order to provide an up-to-date picture of economic conditions. After each round of the new survey, the Statistics Unit will publish a short report presenting a range of economic indicators that can be used to monitor performance of Jersey’s economy, including the headline business activity indicator.
The survey consists of 10 questions to be answered by the Chief Executive or Managing Director of the businesses sampled, asking for their opinions about the current situation of the business and their expectations for the near future. It aims to collect qualitative information that can be used in monitoring the current business situation and in forecasting short term developments. It will also collect information on a range of variables selected to give an overall picture of each sector of the economy and to help monitor the business cycle.
The Statistics Unit will be running the survey independently. To ensure the data collected is representative of Jersey’s economy a stratified random sample of over 450 companies, covering each sector of the economy, will be asked to respond. All data collected will be treated with the strictest confidence and will only be used to produce final aggregate measures.
