24 March 2009
The purpose of this event is to provide training to new volunteers, organise transects for this year and also give volunteers some feedback on previous year’s results.
The Jersey Butterfly Monitoring Scheme has been running for six years and forms part of the department’s integrated monitoring programme for Jersey in order to carry out ‘State of the Environment Monitoring’. One of the schemes main objectives is monitoring specific components of the Countryside Renewal Scheme (CRS).
The JBMS enables us to monitor changes in butterfly abundance and diversity at individual sites and, by comparison with results elsewhere, to assess the impact of local factors such as habitat change caused by management and land-use changes especially in relation to CRS. Butterflies are recognised as important indicator species for general invertebrate health and indicators of environmental and habitat quality.
Saturday’s training event is for volunteers already signed up and those wishing to take part in the above surveys for the Jersey Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (JBMS).
Our training day is being held on;
Saturday 28th March 2009, 10:30 - 16:00
Howard Davis Farm
Trinity
Training includes;
- transect recording methods to count adult numbers of butterflies during their flight periods,
- butterfly identification,
- habitat classification and monitoring form completion.
In addition to training, presentations will be given on previous years butterfly results and UK population results presented by Dr Susan Clarke from Butterfly Conservation.
