Restricted access in the Railway Walk

30 July 2009

Work on behalf of Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is being carried out on the Railway Walk and will restrict access for users for about 10 days, starting on Monday 3 August. Although the Walk will at no time be closed to the public, the works will occupy half of the path and extra care will need to be taken by pedestrians and cyclists, who may be asked to dismount from their bikes when passing the site.

TTS will be replacing a part of the sewer between Mont Les Vaux and Le Mont Nicolle Bridge which is in need of essential repair. Prior to this work taking place, the Department needs to excavate a series of trial pits to ascertain the exact location of other underground mains and services within the railway walk, together with the local ground conditions. This will enable the design for the replacement sewer to be completed. Geomarine Limited will be undertaking this work on behalf of TTS.

The first phase of the sewer replacement along the Railway Walk took place in 2005, when the section from Le Mont Nicolle Bridge to La Rue du Pont Marquet was replaced. These preparation works are ahead of the second phase of sewer replacement which is scheduled for 2010.

“The work programme has been designed to ensure people can still use the Railway Walks while these excavations are taking place” said Connétable Mike Jackson, Minister for Transport and Technical Services. “But it is really important that pedestrians take extra care and cyclists reduce their speed and get off their bikes when they are asked to do so.”
