Staff from Jersey’s Health Department are in St Helier this week raising awareness about the fact that bladder and bowel control problems can affect anyone at any age.
As part of National Continence Awareness Week (21 to 25 September), health professionals will be giving advice at Boots the Chemist in Queen Street on Friday 25 September between 10.30am - 3pm.
The latest research figures suggest there may be about 14 million people affected by some sort of bladder problem. This means that there are more people suffering with this problem than with asthma, diabetes and epilepsy put together.
Lead Nurse / Clinical Nurse Specialist, Sarah Le Lievre, said: "We realise that talking about bladder problems can be very embarrassing and that many people suffer in silence because they are reluctant to get advice.
"Incontinence is not a disease. With proper assessment by a health professional to find out the cause of bladder problem, incontinence can be cured, improved or better managed so that people can maintain a good quality of life."
Anyone wanting more information should contact their GP or the Continence and Urotherapy Service on 443010.
