British Irish Council discusses voluntary and community sector’s role during the downturn

Senator Terry Le Sueur is representing Jersey for the first time as Chief Minister at the latest summit of the British-Irish Council (BIC), which is being held in Cardiff on 20 February.

The summit’s theme is social inclusion and, in particular, the contribution of the voluntary and community sector to helping vulnerable people in society. Jersey will lead part of the discussion on the role of the voluntary sector in responding to the effects of the economic downturn, and refer to the tradition of honorary service and voluntary organisations in the Island.

Senator Terry Le Sueur said: “I anticipate that this BIC meeting will reflect on how the voluntary and community sector, in partnership with government, can respond to the social effects of the economic downturn. These organisations tend to engage with the most vulnerable in society and, may face increased demand for their services at a time when income levels through trading and donations may be under pressure.”

The BIC is the only international organisation that Jersey belongs to in its own right rather than through the UK. Members also include the Scottish government, the Welsh Assembly, the Irish government, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, the Northern Ireland executive and the British government.

Senator Le Sueur said: “The BIC is an extremely valuable forum for us and provides a unique opportunity to discuss policies and share best practice with the most senior ministers of the eight British and Irish administrations that take part.”

The Deputy Chief Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, will also be attending the summit.
