Improved pedestrian safety in St Peter's village

Starting the first week in September, Transport and Technical Services (TTS) will be constructing two new pedestrian refuges in St Peter’s village, replacing the current pelican crossing which no longer best serves the area.

The first refuge to be built will be on La Grande Route de St Pierre to the north of the junction with La Rue de L’Eglise. This location will help bus passengers cross the road.

The second refuge will be located on the same road, to the south of the junction with La Rue de L’Eglise. Currently, there is a pelican crossing at this location, but it is now rarely used as the post office has moved. TTS is concerned that this may lead to drivers ignoring a red light and injuring a pedestrian. Following talks with the Parish, it has been agreed to take away the lights, once the new pedestrian refuge has been built.

“This is the latest scheme in our programme aimed at improving facilities for sustainable modes of transport, in this case pedestrians and bus users” said Caroline Anderson, Director of Transport for TTS. “I am sure the addition of a crossing point near the bus stop will be particularly helpful.”
