Retailers can sign up to a one hour training session this November 2009
You and your staff are invited to participate in a new initiative designed to improve the safety of children online in Jersey this Christmas.
The Jersey Child Protection Committee (JCPC) has responsibility for safeguarding children and young people in Jersey. As part of its remit the e-safety sub-committee is promoting awareness of the dangers children may experience when using 21 century technology including:
- computers
- internet
- mobile phones
- wireless equipment
What is covered in the training sessions
Nola Hopkins, chair of the e-safety sub-committee, and Cathy Phillips, the JCPC's professional officer, will be conducting training with retail staff in Jersey to enable them to answer questions from parents, carers and others about what they can do to protect their children on-line from fraud, paedophiles, and risky behaviour. To ensure there is a trained workforce ready to answer questions in the run-up to Christmas when parents and relatives may be buying new technology for their children, the e-safety sub-committee is offering a free 1 hour training session to enable staff to support parents in making the right decision when they purchase the technology.
Free training sessions
The training will include information about age-appropriate software tools which can be bought alongside the computer or mobile, or can be installed by the parents or the retailer.
We are inviting you to send at least one of your floor staff, and/or any technical staff who interact with the public through installing new software or setting up new equipment. If you choose to partake we will acknowledge training of your sales staff by awarding them with a certificate of participation. We will provide you with a sticker to display in your store window to show customers that your staff have been trained to answer their questions.
All participating stores will be acknowledged and your store advertised at a CEOP (child exploitation on-line protection) event on 11 and 12 November at Fort Regent leisure centre. This event includes awareness sessions directed at professionals and parents throughout the island.

We will also be raising public awareness of these issues at participating stores on Saturday 14 November. In partnership with Jersey Telecom, we will be giving out leaflets, trained staff will be wearing badges, and JCPC representatives will be giving store presentations throughout the day.
We want to encourage parents to buy all their technological equipment at stores that have participated in the programme. Parents will be encouraged to look for the certificate in store and the sticker displayed in the window.
