Parking price rise lower than expected

25 March 2009

From 1 April 2009, prices for parking will be increased to take account of inflation.  However, rather than using the September RPI as normal, the Minister for Transport and Technical Services has decided to use the lower December  RPI of 3.2%, in view of the downturn in the economy.  This will mean that a single unit Paycard will increase from the current price of 56p to the new price of 58p (inclusive of GST).  Monthly and half-monthly season tickets will not rise in cost at all, but will remain at their 2008 price of £94.76 and £47.38 respectively.

“I was reluctant to increase car parking charges when there is a downturn in the economy like this,” said Connétable Mike Jackson, Minister for Transport and Technical Services.  “However, inflation has made prices go up and if we did not increase charges, the fund for the provision and maintenance of car parks would be badly affected.  This is a compromise solution which I hope the public will understand.”
