The Minister for Transport and Technical Services has agreed a proposed programme of various safety improvements for pedestrians across the Island. The schemes that have been chosen will encourage and help people when going to work or school, use the buses or just to walk for pleasure. The projects will be funded by an estimated £150,000 from the funds allocated to the Department in 2009 for sustainable transport initiatives.
The projects are:
- pedestrian refuges and pavement improvements in St Peter’s Village to improve pedestrian access to the village centre bus stop;
- footpath widening at the junction of Rue des Pres and La Rue de la Ville és Rénards in Grouville, to improve the walking route in the vicinity of the crossing patrol for school pupils;
- construction of a short section of roadside footpath on La Rue du Pont Marquet to extend the existing roadside footpath from the junction with La Petite Route des Miélles to the Lavender Farm entrance;
- installation of 26m of pedestrian barrier on La Route és Nouaux to the south of the pedestrian exits from the car park, to encourage school pupils and their parents to use the school crossing patrol;
- improved pedestrian facilities in the St Aubin’s Village area;
- a pedestrian refuge Island on La Route de Quennevais just north of the junction with Pont du Val, in the vicinity of both the eastbound and westbound bus stops, to improve pedestrian access for bus users. This requires slight road re-alignment and widening;
- pedestrian links in the St Mary’s Village area to tie in with improvements to be provided by the Developer of Field 561 and 562;
- construction of a short section of roadside footpath on the west side of Le Rond Collas in St Martin to provide a footpath on both sides of the road at a point better suited to crossing the road. This will improve and encourage pedestrian access to the Parish Hall and School through the existing footpath north of the St John’s Ambulance Brigade training hall;
- construction of a short section of roadside footpath just to the north of the southbound bus stop next to St Ouen’s Parish Hall;
- provision of a footpath link at a safe location to the north of the new La Providence development in St Peter’s Valley;
- provision of a short section of roadside footpath to the north west of Grouville school;
- provision of a pedestrian refuge Island on La Route de St Aubin near Bel Royal, subject to resolution of local difficulties; and
- widen the pavement opposite St Clement’s Church on La Grande Route de St Clement.
The proposed programme is dependent on agreement with some land owners, development control approval and the final cost determined after detailed design work has been completed.
