The Port of Jersey is setting up 9 mini recycling centres around their marinas and port areas to encourage boat owners and harbour users to reduce their waste and recycle more.
The areas will replicate existing recycling collection sites around the island with the same smart wheelie bins and signage, allowing separation of glass, paper, plastic bottles and cans for collection.
Until now the Port of Jersey has used standard waste bins with mixed waste which was mostly collected by a skip lorry for sorting. The new proposal will be remove the skips and replace them with euro bins and incorporate the normal waste bins into the round making more efficient use of staff time.
Collections will now be carried out by the Transport and Technical Services teams using a new compacting dustcart designed for wheelie bins and forming part of the existing TTS waste collection fleet.
The Port of Jersey’s Commercial Director Myra Shacklady said: “This is part of the Port of Jersey’s commitment to offer the best possible customer service along with modern, safe and efficient facilities to marina and harbour users. Recycling facilities of this nature are very common in major European ports, so as visitors arrive here it is imperative we have similar excellent recycling facilities, reflecting the island’s commitment to schemes which make good economic and environmental sense.”
Establishing the new mini-recycling centres will cost the Port of Jersey £20,000 and will be funded from existing budgets.
Head of Waste Prevention and Recycling John Rive, said “Creating convenient and easy to use recycling facilities is key to increasing the island’s recycling rate. We are delighted that the Port of Jersey has invested in recycling facilities and made such a positive commitment to reducing waste.
"This sends a strong message about Jersey’s recycling strategy to local boat owners and traders as well as visitors to the Port and Marinas.’
The 9 recycling centres will be based at locations around the port and marina facilities and will available for use by boat owners, marine traders and visiting boat owners.
