Work commences on Monday 27 April to make various improvements in La Motte Street as part of the Urban Renewal Programme. The project, which will take about 12 weeks to complete, will have the effect of merging this area into the main town precinct and providing a safer and more enlivened area for the public.
The existing pavements will be widened making it safer and easier for pedestrians, and the pavements will be resurfaced with granite paving and include tactile surfaces to aid those people with impaired sight. The road will remain open to one way traffic, but the parking spaces between Snow Hill and Hilary Street will be permanently removed and the road surface will be raised to pavement level from the junction with Colomberie/Hill Street down to Hilary Street to present a more gradual lead off from the precinct. The two disabled places lost will be relocated East of Hilary Street. There will also be improved lighting and street furniture.
As part of these improvements, the current unloading bay outside the S-Bar will be time restricted. When not in use as an unloading bay it can be used as an alfresco area.
Connétable Mike Jackson, Minister for Transport and Technical Services said: “Although Transport and Technical Services will be undertaking this project, it has come about through joint working with the Parish and Planning and Environment, and following a consultation process. I am sure it will give a whole new look to the area.”
