The Department for Education, Sport and Culture and the Board of Governors for
Victoria
College
are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Alun Watkins to the post of Headmaster. This will be effective from September 2010.
Mr Watkins is currently the Deputy Head Teacher of
Abingdon School in Oxfordshire. He was appointed from a strong field of candidates following a two-day assessment centre.
Mr Watkins was born and educated in
Newport
,
South Wales
before completing degrees at the
University
of
Exeter
and the
University
of
Oxford
. From university he moved to
Downside School, near Bath, where he achieved the position of Assistant Housemaster. He also taught biology and coached the school’s first XV, combining his teaching with regular appearances for the highly successful Bath RFC.
Mr Watkins moved to
Abingdon School in Oxfordshire to assume the position of Head of Biology and Director of Rugby, and was promoted to Upper Master and then Deputy Head responsible for pastoral care. Mr Watkins is also an inspector of independent schools.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Watkins said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be succeeding Robert Cook as the next Headmaster of Victoria College. The school has a very fine reputation as a successful day school for boys and a wonderful tradition. I know my family and I are looking forward to living and working in
Jersey
from September 2010”.
The Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr Clive Barton, also added his comments: “The Governors are delighted with the appointment of Alun Watkins, which will ensure continuity of the high levels of achievement established by the current Headmaster”.
The Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, Deputy James Reed, added: “I would like to congratulate Mr Watkins on his appointment to the post of Headmaster of Victoria College and I look forward to working with him from September 2010”.
