Improvements to commuter and tourist bus services

24 March 2010

The Minister for Transport and Technical Services has put forward changes to bus services for residents and visitors in the 2010 summer timetable, which starts on 30 May 2010.

These include:

  • continuing extra commuter journeys introduced earlier in 2010 on services 7, 9 and 12, with some minor adjustments
  • an extra ‘express’ journey via Victoria Avenue on service 15 in the morning and in the evening
  • earlier departures from Grouville Station on service 1 and from Le Marais on service 18 to deal with high demand
  • better co-ordination with the Island Explorer network on service 8A with reduced waiting times for passengers at Living Legend and War Tunnels
  • an amended route for buses on service 4 in Trinity
  • buses from the west of the Island to run direct to Liberation Station after 4pm.

In February 2010,  a number of improvements were made to morning commuter bus journeys and some minor changes are being made to these for the summer timetable. The extra journey from St Brelade Bay will leave 10 minutes earlier, at 7.28am; the additional service on route 9 from St Peter will now start at St Ouen's Parish Hall at 7.30am.

The morning ‘express’ journey on service 15, introduced in summer 2009, has proved popular and this summer 2 extra Monday to Friday departures are being proposed. Commuters living in the east of the Island will also benefit from changes, as there will now be a service 1 leaving Grouville Station at 7.50am and a service 18 leaving Le Marais at 7.25am.

All journeys on the summer-only service 8A (St Helier to the War Tunnels / Living Legend) will operate half an hour later compared to last year on Mondays to Saturdays, except for the final departure at 5.10pm.  This will provide a better spacing of departures towards St Helier reducing pressure on the Island Explorer red and yellow routes.

Changes have also been made to the route of service 4 and 2 journeys will now go onto Bouley Bay throughout the summer.  Due to traffic congestion in town, buses that normally go via Broad Street will now go direct to Liberation Station after 4pm.    This does not affect bus services 5 and 19, which will still call at the Broad Street bus stop on all outbound journeys.

Connétable Mike Jackson, the Minister for Transport and Technical Services, said “These proposals represent the next phase of improvements that I am implementing with Connex. The Monday to Friday ‘express’ service on route 15 has been very successful – passengers like it and I am delighted to announce a second morning journey, with a return departure in the evening.

“I am also pleased to confirm that the proposed changes to the Island Explorer network for 2010 will all be implemented and that this service will restart on 1 April.  This year’s proposed changes have been well received and I am confident that they will contribute to a successful year for tourism in the Island.”

A full list of all changes to bus services will be published in the Gazette part of the JEP on Thursday 25 March and comments are requested before Thursday 8 April 2010. Details can also be collected from TTS’s reception at South Hill.
