Dog owners are being provided with advice about nuisance issues when they buy their annual dog licence at their parish hall.
Health Protection staff have been working with the parishes to raise awareness about nuisance dogs and particularly the noise from barking.
Interim Head of Health Protection, Val Cameron, said “Persistent noise nuisance can be very stressful and can eventually lead to ill health for those continuously exposed to it. The department receives numerous complaints every year about barking dogs. In the majority of cases, responsible dog owners take the necessary measures to stop the nuisance, although occasionally we have no alternative than to serve a statutory nuisance notice to resolve the problem.
"Our online guidance sets out simple steps that dog owners can take to prevent their much loved animals from barking and annoying their neighbours.”
This year, Health Protection staff have been working closely with the parishes so that dog owners buying a licence will be provided with the department’s guidance on barking dogs.
The 12 parishes issue dog licenses to owners every January and charge a small fee of £5.00. Dogs must be licensed by 31 January each year in which the owner is resident in Jersey. Parish halls provide clear details about the responsibilities of dog ownership in the Island which includes how to keep their pets under control. Health Protection’s guidance enhances this and will assist dog owners to meet their responsibilities.
