Child rescued from cliff

A child had to be rescued at Greve de Lecq after he got stuck 20 feet up the cliff face.

The incident happened at around 2:30 yesterday (Wednesday 17 August) on the east side of the beach. A special line rescue vehicle, a fire engine with 6 crew and 1 duty manager, were sent to the scene.

While crews were on their way the child was reassured by the quick actions of a coasteering group and on-duty lifeguards. One of the coasteering group leaders scrambled up to help secure him. Crews then used a ladder to bring the child to safety.

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service Crew Manager Ryan Hall, said: "The quick actions of the lifeguards and the nearby coasteerer meant that the youth was made to feel secure and safe until our arrival and they are to be praised for their valuable part in the rescue."

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service say while climbing cliff faces, people should be aware of the state of the tides.

Ryan Hall added: "We want to encourage outdoor activity and youngsters to have fun and test themselves. As a guide head protection is a must. If you need it on a bike you'll need it climbing. Greve is tricky and the tide is surprising and most of the rock faces quickly become cut off. We would have had to use an Inshore Rescue Boat and things could have got a lot more serious."
