New head at Haute Vallée school

An experienced head teacher from a school in South Wales will take up the headship at Haute Vallée school from September 2011.

Caryl Lewis, currently the head at Lewis Girls’ School in Caerphilly, has been appointed to take over from Bob Fairhurst, who retires at the end of the summer term after more than 10 years leading the St Helier secondary school.

Mrs Lewis (52) began her teaching career in Suffolk in 1981 and moved to Wales the following year. Since then she has worked in 6 secondary schools, moving up from second in the English department to head of English, assistant head teacher, deputy head and finally head teacher at Lewis Girls’ School.

“Mrs Lewis has an extremely strong track record, particularly in her current school, which has significantly improved under her leadership and become one of the highest achieving in that local education authority,” said Jersey’s Director of Education Mario Lundy.

Rod Bryans, the chairman of Haute Vallée’s board of governors commented “Bob Fairhurst has been an excellent head teacher for Haute Vallée and we are delighted to be able to appoint a professional of Mrs Lewis’ calibre to take over from him.”

Mrs Lewis said: “I believe that Haute Vallée school has significant and impressive current strengths but also has the potential to become even stronger and more successful. My educational philosophy is founded upon a strong belief in inclusivity and the importance of a broad, balanced education for all in a caring, tolerant community where each child can fulfil his / her learning potential. I am looking forward to taking up a new challenge in Jersey.”
