2 young people from Jersey are to represent the Island at the fourth Commonwealth Youth Parliament in London between the 6 and 10 September 2011.
Sam Mezec, who studied at Hautlieu School, is currently studying for a Law Degree at the University of Westminster and James Rondel, who was a pupil at De La Salle College, is currently reading History and Politics at the University of Reading.
Organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, the Commonwealth Youth Parliament will bring together around 80 young people between the ages of 18 and 29 from across the Commonwealth.
The aim of the Youth Parliament is to strengthen understanding of parliamentary democracy among participants and provide a forum for them to express their ideas, concerns and expectations.
The Youth Parliament will mirror proceedings in Parliament with debates, question time and committee work. The final session of the Youth Parliament will be held in the House of Lords Debating Chamber. The participants will have the opportunity to meet the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Right Honorable John Bercow MP, and the Commonwealth Secretary General His Excellency Kamalesh Sharma.
The Chairman of the Jersey Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Connétable Len Norman said: "The Commonwealth Youth Parliament provides a wonderful opportunity for young people to meet colleagues from right across the Commonwealth and young people from Jersey who have attended the previous Youth Parliaments have found them to be tremendously interesting and enjoyable. I am sure that both Sam and James will be wonderful ambassadors for Jersey and I know that they will benefit greatly from attendance at the event."
