Seminar to promote children's play

Educators and childcare professionals will focus on the importance of children’s play at a seminar on 13 July. The event, which features 3 visiting experts, will enable staff in the play, child care and education sectors to share best practice and ensure children have the widest possible opportunities.

It’s being organised by the Early Years and Childcare Partnership (EYCP), a body formed in April 2009 to improve cooperation between Jersey's childcare agencies, to highlight children’s needs and ensure they are taken into consideration during government decision-making.

The vice-chair of the EYCP, Belinda Lewis, believes the Island must take play seriously. “We all take it for granted that children will play naturally and spontaneously wherever they are - at home, in the street, with friends in open spaces and parks. But play has a serious side. It’s a central part of how children explore the world, learn to take calculated risks and interact with others.

“We need to make sure that children today have the right balance of freedom and protection when they play. They need adventure and challenge and opportunities to try new experiences, whatever their background or circumstances. That’s why this seminar is important.

"It is a rare opportunity for a wide range of professionals to come together, share their experiences, hear from experts and focus on how we can recognise the importance of play.”

The EYCP has already consulted with children, parents and professionals. This seminar, along with the findings of the consultations, will be contributing to the development of a play strategy for Jersey, which EYCP will be launching later this year.

The visiting speakers are Wendy Russell from Gloucester University, Rob Wheway from the UK Children’s Play Advisory Service and Penny Wilson from Tower Hamlets Play Association.
