The Minister for Transport and Technical Services, Deputy Kevin Lewis, has unveiled 2 history interpretation panels at the Millennium Town Park.
When the park was being designed and throughout the consultation and Planning Application process, it was felt that the history of the park area should be marked in some way. A timeline in stones was incorporated into the central paved area and unveiled when the park opened last October.
It has taken a little longer both to research the history in more detail and design the 2 artistic interpretation panels which were unveiled today with the help of children from Springfield School.
The panels were designed by local artist Anna Le Moine Gray, with Marie-Louise Backhurst of the Société Jersiaise helping with the historical research. The first panel shows the site as it might have looked in the Medieval period when it was a marsh. The second panel depicts the coming of gas lighting in the nineteenth century. The artwork is inspired by illuminated manuscripts of the eighth century.
After the unveiling, the children from Springfield School were given questionnaires which could be answered by studying the interpretation panels. The children also also helped with the spring planting in the gardens.
