TTS will be widening the cycle route adjacent to Castle Street roundabout and where it crosses Route de Port Elizabeth as part of its programme to improve facilities for cyclists.
Work will start on widening this section of the cycle route on Wednesday 11 January and will take about 6 weeks, depending on the weather. The route is shared with pedestrians and more space is needed to better accommodate the 2 activities. A few small trees will need to be removed but will be replaced by 4m high trees.
This is the latest phase of a project to provide a fully off-road cycle route from Havre des Pas to link up with the western cycle route that starts at the Waterfront. The route will be shared between cyclists and pedestrians, with most of the designated path completed already by widening out the existing pavement. TTS was able to incorporate these improvements as part of the La Collette emergency access road project and the Commercial Buildings road resurfacing project. Improvements and widening of the existing pathway between the Steam Clock and the New North Quay are ongoing and should be completed within the next 6 weeks.
