Transport and Technical Services (TTS) has commissioned local artist Matt Daly, through the Jersey Arts Trust, to paint the hoarding boards that are being erected to protect the site of a major drainage project that has just started in Phillips Street, St Helier. The mural will be erected from Tuesday 4 December.
Matt used 90 sheets of 8ft x 4ft plywood, resulting in a total mural size of 55 metres long by 5 metres high, making it the biggest mural that Jersey has ever seen. It can be enjoyed by the public for the next 12 months while work on the project continues.
The images on the mural illustrate the whole Island, running from east to west, covering the landscape of Gorey to Corbiere, sunrise to sunset.
Underground theme
Matt said “The main theme was the tunnelling works for the North St. Helier Flood Alleviation Scheme, so in the mural there are tunnelling machines, cranes and men at work, along with other underground details such as worms, moles, dinosaur bones and dodo skeletons.
"Above ground there are various local buildings, birds, red arrows and big flowers – it’s all very bright, colourful and quirky.”
Visual Arts Coordinator at Jersey Arts Trust, Sasha Gibb, said “The Trust is delighted to be working with TTS and Matt Daly to really make a difference to the site.
"We are always looking for ways to develop public art in Jersey, and TTS understand the social benefit of involving an artist with their project. We look forward to seeing the mural installed and to more joint projects in the future."
