Following the investigation it is now clear after examination of the scene, CCTV evidence and interviews with the gas company employees that Jersey Gas company operatives were repairing a gas leak on the side of the gas holder and during that process ignition of the leaking gas occurred.
The fire then developed into a substantial flaming fire which allowed rapid development of radiant heat to attack joints in the tank construction. This caused the joints to leak substantial amounts of gas to create a wall of fire.
The procedure for repairing a gas leak on the holder will be subject to further investigation by the Health and Safety Inspectorate.
