Some of Jersey’s top young musicians will have the opportunity to perform alongside the world famous Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines when they perform as part of the 2012 Barclays Jersey Boat Show.
The band will perform a traditional military band concert repertoire at a gala charity performance on the evening of Sunday 6 May at the Jersey Opera House. The 4 finalists of the PwC Young Musician of the Year competition will accompany them for one of their pieces, and Krystian Lamb, who was crowned this year’s champion, will be playing his winning piece.
The evening promises to demonstrate the band’s skill and dexterity with drum beatings, along with virtuoso solo performances from individual members as well as traditional and well-loved ‘big band’ sounds. Money raised from ticket sales will be donated to The Prince’s Trust and the Royal Navy Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC).
Group Commercial Director for Ports of Jersey, Myra Shacklady, explained "A previous charity gala concert at the Opera House held as part of our 2010 boat show weekend was very popular and we are confident of achieving the same success this year, while raising much needed funds for our chosen charities. We are extremely honoured that the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines are to join us in 2012 as their incredible performance, along with some of Jersey’s most talented young musicians joining them on stage, will ensure it’s an evening not to be missed."
The Sunday evening gala charity performance at the Jersey Opera House will commence at 7:30pm. Tickets, which cost between £17 and £22, are likely to sell quickly and are now on sale through the theatre box office or online at the Jersey Opera House website.
While in Jersey, the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines will also be playing 2 public ‘beating retreat’ evening performances on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 May in the Barclays Jersey Boat Show arena on the Albert Quay. ‘Beating retreat’ is a military ceremony dating back to 16th century England and was first used to recall nearby patrolling units to their castle.
The Royal Marines Band visit to Jersey has been made possible by the generous support of Condor Ferries. The Barclays Jersey Boat Show, which takes place in and around St Helier Marina, opens on Saturday 5 May and will run for 3 days over the Bank Holiday weekend, closing on the evening of Monday 7 May. It gives Islanders and tourists alike the opportunity to dip their toes in all things nautical and discover the wealth of maritime activities and services available in the Island. Now in its fifth year, the award-winning Barclays Jersey Boat Show prides itself on its family atmosphere, featuring a multitude of activities and services both on and off-water. These include a fisherman’s village, action packed demonstrations and opportunities to ‘have a go’ activities for adults and children alike and as you’d expect a plethora of boats, many of which will be open to the public to view. The pontoons in St Helier Marina will also feature a mix of aspirational and practical powerboats as well as sailing yachts to purchase or simply admire.
For those who prefer to keep their feet dry and lap up the festival atmosphere, they can take advantage of the on-land activities and numerous stalls from a variety of local and visiting traders, as well as live stage entertainment and tasty food and drink outlets.
