Jersey Tourism, and tour operator Bontour, are encouraging German-speaking residents to become guides for visitors this summer.
Jersey had a 23% increase in the number of German staying leisure visitors in 2011 and, with more expected in 2012, there is a higher demand for German-speaking guides. Director of Tourism David de Carteret said "We had 13,000 German staying leisure visitors last year and with new routes and increased capacity from Germany this year, we are expecting that number to rise. The service provided by guides is vital, so we are encouraging local people to help cater for the increased demand."
General Manager of Bontour Karine David said "Most German visitors come as part of an organised tour and already we have had more requests for German-speaking guides. Our guides escort groups for either half a day or a full day around the island, introducing them to the history and culture of Jersey. We are looking for people who speak German, are confident with people, have good customer service skills and are able to take charge of a group. Guides act on a freelance basis so the work can be built around other commitments. Many tours take place at weekends and guides can expect to earn up to £130 for a full day's guiding service."
Bontour are also offering to cover the cost for any guides selected to participate in the Jersey Tourist Guides Association Bronze Award course, run by Highlands College. The course takes place at the end of February and involves some evening classes as well as three Saturdays.
