The Transport and Technical Services (TTS) Recycling Team, who promote washable nappies as a way to reduce household waste, have teamed up with Cheeky Beans, a group of local mums who use washable nappies with their babies, to help more parents and expecting parents think about using washables.
To coincide with Real Nappy Week, Cheeky Beans have launched a new service providing trial kits of different brands and sizes of washable nappies to help parents decide which type of washable best suits their baby.
The kits can be hired for a minimum of 2 weeks and contain a complete set of 7 nappies or wraps plus accessories, including a nappy bucket, mesh wash bag, boosters, liners and wipes.
Liz Gosselin, co-founder of Cheeky Beans, said “The theme of this year's Real Nappy Week is "Real nappies....real easy!" and this couldn't be more true. Cloth nappies are not the same flat terries with pins and rubber pants people might remember, they are used in exactly the same way as disposables and fasten with velcro or poppers. They come in various colours and patterns and some even have frills and ruffles.
“Starting out with washable nappies can be a bit daunting, there are so many different types and brands to choose from, knowing which one is best for you and your baby can be challenging. When I started out there was no support or help available locally, which I think is so important. This is why Anneke and I started Cheeky Beans and now we have trial kits, parents are able to try out different nappies before they commit to buying and we can give plenty of advice along the way.”
Emma Richardson, Recycling Manager, TTS, said “Disposable nappies account for about 3% of the Island’s household waste. By promoting the use of washable nappies, we have an opportunity to help families reduce their waste and also save money. We are delighted to be working with Cheeky Beans who can provide local advice and we hope that parents take advantage of the trial kits to see how easy it is to use today’s modern washables."
Cheeky Beans will be celebrating Real Nappy Week in Stanley's Cafe at Holme Grown on Saturday 21 April between 10.30am and 2.30pm and anyone who would like more information about washable nappies is very welcome to drop in to see the different washables available and get advice from the local nappy experts.
Alternatively, Cheeky Beans can be contacted directly for advice or to arrange nappy demonstrations by visiting their website or finding Cheeky Beans on Facebook.
