St Helier drainage project starts soon

09 October 2012

Work starts later this month on a major drainage project that will considerably reduce the risk of flooding in the north of town.

The area around West Centre has flooded in times of particularly heavy rainfall.  This is because the drainage system cannot cope with the sudden high volume of water. This £5.6m scheme has been developed by Transport and Technical Services (TTS) and its contractors to increase the capacity in the drainage system and to separate rain water from the foul water sewers.

Following the preparatory work completed earlier in the year, contractors will be on site from 22 October. Most of the work will be in the southwest corner of Ann Court Car Park and should be completed by December 2013.

Traffic diversions

An overflow chamber will be constructed at the junction of Phillips Street and Providence Street, which will mean the closure of that junction and some local traffic diversions.  This part of the work should be complete by March 2013.

Parking

From 22 October approximately 80 parking spaces at Ann Court Car Park will be taken over as temporary contract work space until the end of the contract in December next year. To compensate for this loss of parking, approximately 30 spaces will be made available in Charles Street and 45 spaces at the old Ann Street Brewery Site, which can be accessed from St Saviours Road.

TTS and their contractors will keep any disruption to a minimum. There will be minor traffic restrictions which will be explained on this website and through the media.
