Appeal launched for typhoon victims

Islanders are being encouraged to help victims of Typhoon Haiyan which has devastated large parts of the Philippines and left an estimated ten thousand people dead and hundreds of thousands without homes, food, clean water and medicine.

 

The Philippines Typhoon Disaster Appeal is being launched today by the Bailiff, Sir Michael Birt, in response to the humanitarian disaster in the Philippines and the huge public interest in delivering aid to the victims of the typhoon which hit the community at the end of last week.

 

The appeal has been established to enable members of the public to make a donation to the intensive emergency efforts being made to relieve the human suffering caused by the devastating typhoon, which has prompted support from communities from across the world.

 

Donations will be provide relief through the supply of water, food and medical supplies to the Philippines and will be coordinated with the response of the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission which has already pledged £150,000 in equal parts to the British Red Cross, Unicef and Oxfam, in addition to ongoing funding already committed to the area through other projects.

 

Sir Michael said “What has happened in the Philippines is clearly a human tragedy on a massive scale and as a fellow island community, Jersey will be keen to show its support to those who so desperately need emergency supplies, be it in the form of essential medicine, clean drinking water, food or shelter. I hope that by establishing a public disaster appeal fund, Islanders will feel better able to make their contribution count in the knowledge that the funds raised will collectively be put to work to achieve the highest possible benefit for the people of the Philippines in their hour of need.”

Donations can also be made over the counter at the States Treasury Cashiers, located on the ground floor of Cyril Le Marquand House, The Parade, St. Helier which is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday.

 

Donations can also be made at any of the Island’s parish halls.
