Ports of Jersey are planning major refurbishment work this winter which will include removing the bridge used to load passengers and vehicles onto ferries at St Helier Harbour and replacing the fishermen's berths next to La Collette yacht basin.
A tender process is already underway to find a local contractor to carry out the refurbishment and replacement of the fishermen’s berths. A decision on the successful contractor is expected at the end of July 2013. It's hoped the project, which is part of the Ports of Jersey’s long term capital works programme, will start soon after and take three months to complete.
According to David Tisdale, Capex Manager for Ports of Jersey, the refurbishment work is long overdue and will provide the Island’s fishing fleet with a safer working environment. He said: "The refurbishment of the fishermen’s berths will enhance an ageing pontoon system through the introduction of new materials, including pontoon decking, additional lighting and emergency equipment."
A second tender process will be launched towards the end of October 2013 for the work in St Helier Harbour. This will involve removing the linkspan, the bridge used to load and offload passengers and vehicles onto ferries, which was installed in the 1970s. The bridge is now beyond repair and of little benefit to existing harbour operations. Removing it will allow a revised layout of existing berths four and five, improving facilities and access for vessels, including the RNLI and South Coast Cruises. It will also release the southwest corner of St Helier Marina for possible future additional berths.
Following the tender process and appointment of the successful contractor, it is hoped that work will be carried out over the autumn/winter period and that the project will be finished before spring 2014 boating.
The cost of these projects will be allocated from the Ports of Jersey Trading Fund.
