Aspiring doctors advised on starting their careers

Aspiring doctors have been finding out about studying medicine at degree level.

 

The taster sessions last week were delivered to 24 students from year 11 and 12 at a workshop coordinated by Careers Jersey in partnership with the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS).

 

The roadshow has been coming to Jersey for the past four years and is designed to raise young people’s aspirations and increase their awareness of a range of educational and career opportunities in medicine and healthcare. The event included a set of fun-filled, interactive sessions delivered by fully trained BSMS staff and third year undergraduates.

 

Ben Sandeman, education liaison officer at Careers Jersey, helped coordinate the event.

 

“These practical sessions are incredibly valuable for students who are planning a medical career," he said. "Competition for places on medical degrees is fierce and these sessions help students to make their application stand out from the crowd. Local students are also able to speak to current undergraduates who can give a valuable insight into what is expected from them, not only by the course but student life in general.”

 

Darren Beaney, BSMS's admissions tutor, coordinates the workshops in Jersey, the UK and across Europe.

 

“These workshops bridge the gap between application and university life," he said. "Some of the areas we covered over the four-day event come directly from lectures given in the first and second years of university. In addition to the practical elements, students are also given advice on which medical school to choose. The Jersey students were incredibly focused and I plan to return in September to help them with their UCAS applications, in particular their personal statements and perform mock interviews.”
