People moving to Jersey will have to pay £75 for a registration card before they can start work as part of the new Control of Housing and Work Law.
It’s one of a number of fees to be introduced under the new law, which aims to establish a more effective system of immigration control. If these fees are approved by the States Assembly, the law will come into force on 1 July 2013.
Under the new law:
- migrants arriving in the Island will have to pay £75 for a registration card
- businesses that employ migrants will have to pay £175 per Licenced employee, £50 per Registered employee
- visiting contractors and traders will have to pay a fee of £500 - £1,500 to work in Jersey
The fees bring Jersey into line with other jurisdictions and will meet the cost of administering the new migration controls.
Exemptions
A number of exemptions to the new law have also been published. Entitled people who are self employed will not need a licence to run a business if they work less than eight hours a week or 60 days a year.
However, a construction business visiting Jersey for more than five days a year will need a licence.
These exemptions have been designed to reduce red tape while also supporting local employment.
The Chair of the Migration Advisory Group, Senator Paul Routier, said “Our existing laws urgently need replacing. However, this must be done in an ordered manner to make the process as seamless as possible for businesses.
“We hope the package of measures we have announced this week, including a firm implementation date, fees, practical exemptions and guidance materials, will allow this to take place.”
