New breast surgeon extends hospital capability

18 November 2013

Jersey’s hospital has recruited a new specialist in breast surgery, which expands the range of treatment available in the Island.

Islanders have previously needed to fly to the UK for reconstructive surgery, resulting in multiple trips at considerable expense.

Matthew Stephenson, Consultant in General and Oncoplastic Breast Surgery, joined the hospital in September and has already been able to treat a number of women who would have otherwise needed to travel.

“There’s been a lot of very good work going on in Jersey, for instance regarding breast screening, and we are now able to back this up by providing a wider range surgery to those who need it,” he said.

Mr Stephenson studied Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital in West London and completed surgical training at hospitals in South-East England, after which he worked in London, Kent and East Sussex for 17 years.

“We are delighted to have expanded the range of treatment that is available in Jersey through the recruitment of a specialist in this area,” said Helen O’Shea, Managing Director of Jersey General Hospital. “Those patients who have previously been required to travel to the UK for surgery know that making such journeys isn’t ideal, and it’s a very positive step to be able to offer this service in the Island – close to a patient’s home and their family and friends.”
