Top-level talks on future of sport

The Island’s sports leaders are meeting this week to discuss the future of sport in Jersey.

 

More than 50 representatives of sports clubs, associations and representative bodies are taking part in a one-off discussion on Wednesday as part of the consultation on a future Sport Strategy for Jersey.

 

The debate is taking place after the Annual General Meeting of the Jersey Sports Council. Invited participants will have an opportunity to raise questions about funding, facilities and the organisation of sport in future.

 

 

Deputy Roy Le Herissier, the ESC Assistant Minister with responsibility for sport, will be attending. He said “The timing of this meeting is excellent. It gives us an opportunity to speak to a range of people at one event and for them to share experiences and views with each other. I am hoping that these representatives will pass on their members’ views.”

 

Hugh Raymond, chairman of the Jersey Sports Council, said “The Sports Council is delighted to be able to contribute in this way to the important debate about the future of sport in our Island. I hope this will be the start of a chain reaction that prompts other people to take part.”

 

Derek De La Haye, ESC’s Assistant Director for Sport, added “I know people feel passionately about their sport in Jersey and are keen to develop a coherent plan for the future. We need to do this together so we want to hear from as many people as possible.”

 

 

A Sport Strategy consultation paper was launched last month. It sets out the issues facing Jersey’s sporting community and asks for the opinions of anyone who is involved in sport in the Island, whether they take part or volunteer.

 

Once the views have been analysed, changes could be proposed in a White Paper that will go to the States before the end of the year.

 

More than 150 consultation responses have been received so far and the deadline for responses is 31 May. Islanders can submit comments via email or complete an online survey.
