Finalists in the UK Flame Awards 2013

 

The Home Energy Scheme provides a range of energy efficiency improvements to vulnerable private households. The scheme, which is free to eligible households, provided an ideal opportunity for the Fire and Rescue Service to deliver potentially life saving interventions for this sector of the community, which is more at risk from fire.

 

 

A Jersey Home Energy and Fire Safety Partnership was formed, to ensure that these homes have a working smoke alarm and receive essential fire safety information, in addition to the energy efficiency improvements.

 

By the end of 2012 the Partnership had completed its third full year of delivering targeted advice to more than 1200 homes.  Contractors working on behalf of the scheme have, so far, installed more than 640 smoke alarms.

 

 

Details of the partnership's work were submitted to the 2013 Flame Awards, which are an annual celebration of the efforts of community groups, volunteers, charities and the emergency services who have run projects that have made a significant difference for communities in the UK or overseas.

The finalists for the award were announced last week, with the Jersey Home Energy & Fire Partnership being shortlisted as a finalist in the sub category ‘Hero in the Community’.

 

 

The Flame Awards Event Manager, Chris Parry, said “I would like to congratulate Jersey Fire & Rescue Service and the Energy Efficiency Service on being in the final three to win the Hero in the Community Award at the Flame Awards 2013. 

 

"Their home energy scheme and fire safety partnership has supported more than 1200 homes, as well as installing more than 640 smoke alarms to qualifying Jersey residents. As one of the UK’s smallest fire services, this is an outstanding achievement that deserves all the national recognition it receives."

 

Jersey's Chief Fire Officer, Mark James, said "This partnership has enabled Jersey Fire and Rescue Service to significantly increase, in a highly targeted way, its home fire safety checks.  We are delighted to have been shortlisted for these awards which recognise this innovative partnership with the Energy Efficiency Service that combines social, environmental and safety benefits."

 

The winners will be announced at the Flame Awards ceremony in Manchester on Friday 25 January 2013.
