Radon review response

21 October 2014

The Health and Social Services Department has issued its response to the review into radon gas published in September by the Environment Scrutiny Panel.

In its response, HSSD has confirmed that its role, carried out by the Environmental Health team, is to advise on the risks associated with radon and their mitigation.

HSSD recommends that all buildings in Jersey (with a ground floor or basement – flats and apartments above the ground floor are not included) should be tested for radon levels. Domestic premises built since 1997 include membranes to prevent radon entering. A test will ensure this membrane is still working.

Any property with its own water supply should check with their maintenance contractor that their system includes aeration to remove any radon which may be present.

Further information on radon, including details about how to conduct tests, can be obtained from the UK reference site on radon from Public Health England.
