Channel Islanders are being asked to give feedback on a new section of this website providing weather information for the Channel Islands.
The new weather section comes as a result of a joint project between Jersey Met and the States of Jersey web team to replace the www.jerseymet.gov.je site, which looks dated and is running on web servers that are due for replacement.
The old site will continue to be available in the short term while testing is completed and user feedback is reviewed. Following this, the existing www.jerseymet.gov.je address will redirect users to the new location.
Weather on smartphone
Principal Meteorological Officer Anthony Pallot said “The new weather section on www.gov.je is one of several initiatives we’ve been working on in the last year to improve how Channel Islanders can receive forecasts. We launched our Twitter account in March last year and this has proved very popular with 2,700 followers who now receive updated forecasts four times a day.
"We also worked with the web team to launch a smartphone-optimised website which contains weather forecasts, tides times as well as information about roadworks, harbour and airport arrivals and departures information in real time, and contact details for States departments.
“While there are many weather forecast sites available on the internet, the www.gov.je/weather section is one of the few sources that are based on the local knowledge of the Jersey Met team of experts rather than being entirely computer-generated.”
Future upgrades
States of Jersey Web Services Manager Marcus Ferbrache said “This is part of our ongoing work to consolidate the States of Jersey’s websites and to standardise both the look and feel and the underlying technology. Now that the Jersey Met content is part of the gov.je site, it will benefit from future upgrades including a major refresh of the site planned for 2014 which will reflect the popularity of tablet computers and smartphones to access the internet.”
