Islanders are being invited to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War at the Ceremony of Light, which is being held on Monday 4 August from 9pm to 11pm in the Royal Square.
Britain declared war on Germany at 11pm on 4 August 1914, and dignitaries including His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir John McColl; the Bailiff, Sir Michael Birt; and the Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, will commemorate the moment at the Ceremony of Light, an event which will include war recitals and a candlelight lantern parade.
Also attending from the UK will be Lord Faulks QC, Minister of State for Justice who will be on an official visit to the Island.
Tickets from Jersey Tourism and Bailiff's Chambers
There will be seating for 1,700 people, although only a limited number are still available. Tickets are free and can be obtained from the Bailiff’s Chambers in the Royal Square or from Jersey Tourism. There will also be plenty of standing room at the event for members of the public who have been unable to get a seat.
The Bailiff, Sir Michael Birt, said “I hope that as many Islanders as possible will join together for this important and moving ceremony in the Royal Square to reflect and remember the start of the First World War one hundred years ago.”
Lights Out Campaign
Those Islanders who are unable to attend are invited to observe the Lights Out Campaign, which is being run by the Royal British Legion, and switch off their all but one light between 10pm and 11pm on 4 August.
