School improvements planned for 2014

The Department for Education, Sport and Culture has submitted planning applications for building projects that will extend and improve six schools in Jersey.

The projects, which were approved by the States last year as part of the 2014 Budget, are:

d’Auvergne School	Build seven extra classes at the back of the existing school to meet demand for places from children living in the own area. The new classes will be filled up gradually over seven years. This means the school will benefit from extra space in the meantime
Plat Douet School	Build two new classrooms and improve outside areas, particularly around the Reception class area
Springfield School	Construct a new block at the back of the plot to provide one extra class, make improvements to the hall, other internal areas and the outside play space
Bel Royal School	Significant internal alterations to improve access and mobility within the school. Two new classrooms will be built plus physiotherapy space, toilets and new resource areas
Mont Nicolle School	Outside hard play space to be extended and parking to be improved
Haute Vallée School	Construction of additional accommodation behind the existing art classrooms to create a specialist unit for students with autistic spectrum disorder
Trinity School	A planning application to extend Trinity School will be made later this year

Sufficient places for children

The Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, Deputy Patrick Ryan, said "ESC have worked very closely with Property Holdings on these projects, which will ensure that the Island has sufficient places in its States primary schools for our children, particularly in the town area, for the foreseeable future. In addition, the unit at Haute Vallée will provide a much-needed facility for students who require specialist help in order to thrive at school. I am delighted we are a step closer to realising these plans."

Deputy Eddie Noel, Assistant Treasury Minister with responsibility for Property Holdings, added "These building projects not only provide a cost-effective way of addressing the accommodation shortfall, they will also provide opportunities for local construction companies."
