Islanders are being urged to make sure their smoke alarms are working after a bedroom fire caused serious damage to a St Helier home last night (Monday 17 March).
The home was fitted with two well-sited smoke alarms but the one closest to the fire was not fitted with a battery.
Crew Commander John Le Cornu said "Having a properly fitted, functioning smoke alarm is a major factor in staying safe in your home. Jersey Fire and Rescue would urge people to ensure that their smoke alarms are fitted with a working battery and to test each alarm once a week."
Two crews from Jersey Fire and Rescue attended the fire just before 8.30 pm, quickly bringing it under control and making sure no one was trapped in the property. An adjacent house was also evacuated while the loft was cleared of smoke. One resident was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
