Eco active is inviting staff from care providers and the Health and Social Services Department to a free seminar to learn from a UK energy saving scheme that could save the NHS up to £35 million a year.
The Operation TLC initiative proposes introducing simple ways staff can reduce heating and light use for environmental benefits and improved patient care.
Operation TLC was developed by Barts Health NHS Trust, working with behavioural change charity Global Action Plan. Barts Health is the largest NHS trust in the UK and the initiative saved the organisation more than £100,000 (approximately three per cent) off their energy bill in the first year.
Less patient disruption
Financial savings in the second year rose to more than £425,000, and patients reported fewer sleep, noise and privacy disruptions. Staff involved with the initiative have been awarded a United Nations Environment Certificate to recognise their success.
Planning and Environment Minister Deputy Steve Luce said "We all appreciate that staff in hospitals and care environments want to deliver the best care they can for their patients. The Operation TLC programme recognises this and has been proven to deliver improvements in patient experience as well as reducing energy use and costs. With the challenges we face around the aging population and reducing our island’s carbon footprint, I hope that both the care industry and the hospital take up this fantastic training opportunity."
Carbon savings
Eco active programme manager Jane Burns highlighted that the training is part of a wider initiative to target high carbon business sectors. "The Eco active business programme is challenged with delivering significant carbon savings over the coming years. To achieve our targets we need to work with the business sectors that are using large amounts of energy such as the care industry. Operation TLC is a win-win initiative where both the environment and business itself can benefit from introducing some simple changes," said Jane.
The training will be provided by founding members of the Operation TLC initiative from Barts Health Trust and Global Action Plan. The event is free to attend and will be held at Jersey Hospice on 24 November. If you would like to take part, please contact Eco active.
