Health and Social Services are celebrating excellence and innovation at two award events this week.
The Quality Improvement Awards were held on Wednesday 21 January 2015 and aim to promote, recognise and reward innovation in practice. Staff were able to enter any project undertaken which has benefitted HSSD. 12 teams of project finalists were chosen by judges across four categories. The winners of each category were
- Patient/Client Safety: The Eat Safe Scheme (Environmental Health Department).
- Value for Money: Outcomes from Colorectal Surgery
- Customer Care: Pulmonary Rehabilitation
- Service Innovation: Non-medical prescribing
The judges were Chief Executive of Mind Jersey, James Le Feuvre; Chief Executive of Home Affairs and Corporate Lead for the Reform Programme, Steven Austin-Vautier, and Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Environment and Corporate Lead for Lean and Culture Change, Andrew Scate.
Achievement awards
The overall winner of the Quality Improvement Awards will be announced at the Health and Social Services Achievement Awards on Friday 23 January 2015.
Chief Nurse, Rose Naylor who oversees the Quality Improvement Awards said “The judges had a tough job to pick their winners as the projects all have merit in their own right and reflect the diversity of services Health and Services deliver. I am very proud of the work of our staff which is a real credit to this organisation.
“These awards, in particular, are a highlight as they showcase the work and talent of staff as well as providing an important opportunity to create some healthy competition and reward staff. It’s a fantastic event which culminates in the overall winner being announced at the Achievement Awards event on Friday evening.”
Staff contribution
At Friday's Achievement Awards around 170 Health and Social Services staff will be joined by the Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, Health and Services Minister, Senator Andrew Green, and former Minister, Deputy Anne Pryke. The event is an opportunity to thank staff for their work and contribution to the organisation and to recognise the important role staff's families play in supporting them.
Awards will be given for long service, involvement in reform work, professional awards and for unsung heroes. At the awards, the keynote speech will be delivered by Assistant Minister for Health and Social Services, Deputy Peter McLinton.
Quality of service
Senator Green said “This will be the first year I have attended the Achievement Awards as Minister for Health and Social Services. In the short time I have been leading the department I have been impressed by not only the breadth of the work which goes on here, but the dedication of the staff I have met, and the quality and range of the services we offer.
“The Achievement Awards are an opportunity for us to say thank you to many HSSD employees, many of whom have achieved their long service awards. We also take the opportunity to try to single out those who are the unsung heroes in their teams and to reward colleagues who have undertaken the demands of work associated with gaining a professional qualification or award, or who are working in new ways to help us be effective and offer the best service to all the Islanders who need us. I am very much looking forward to the evening.”
Rose Naylor said "This is a special evening of celebration at which a number of achievements are recognised. We know what an incredible job all our staff perform every day, and the evening is a way of saying thank you to as many people as possible. There is so much work which goes on in the department.
"Whilst a larger proportion of health and social services is made up of doctors, nurses and social workers, the range of roles is really diverse. There are so many specialist roles across the service. Colleagues who run our laundry, fix our buildings, cook food for patients, and who are part of our governance teams and administration functions all make a valuable contribution, and we want to say thank you to all of them."
