Fire fighters rescued a retired racehorse from a ditch on Friday 27 March.
The service was called after the racehorse, Rodney, fell into a ditch in a field on Rue du Sud, St Brelade, and was unable to get back on its feet.
Fire crews managed to secure a strop under Rodney in the hope that it could be used to help pull him to his feet. They also flattened out the area around him to reduce the angle of the bank for him to stand and cut away a branch which was restricting his movement.
18 year old Rodney’s owner was at the scene and a vet was also present to give advice and deliver any treatment necessary. Rodney seems fine apart from a sore leg.
Station Commander Marc Le Cornu said “These types of rescues are always challenging and really make us think outside the box on how best to achieve a successful rescue. Initially Rodney was in a very awkward position, but after a bit of movement, some digging by our firefighters and a final pull on the strops, it was fantastic to see Rodney get back onto his feet!”
